Barbara Hulanicki

The founder of the game-changing Biba boutique, Hulanicki opened her first store in Kensington in 1964. With its decadent, Art Nouveau interiors and staffed by stylish girls (including a young Anna Wintour), it was a dress-up box of affordable treasures – 50s dresses, 30s-inspired silk stockings, ostrich feather boas… plus make-up, homeware and even Bibabranded baked beans. The second Biba that opened in 1966 even had a nightclub. No wonder it was dubbed “the sexiest shop on Earth”.
