Zandra Rhodes
Rhodes wafted onto the fashion scene in the early 70s, the first designer to make printed textiles a key part of clothes design. Her flowing creations featured hand-painted prints inspired by nature (shells, Japanese flowers), as well as her signature “squiggle” pattern. Her designs won her fans from the worlds of rock ’n’ roll to royalty, and her love of vibrant colours and theatrical embellishment made her the perfect designer for performers like Queen’s Freddie Mercury. She went on to design costumes for opera, and to found London’s Fashion and Textile Museum.
