Ghent, Belgium
Often overlooked in favour of its neighbours Bruges or Brussels, Ghent is an utter gem with plenty of medieval history. Its most important Cathedral, St Bavo’s, is famous for the striking Altarpiece, dating from 1432, composed of 18 panels evoking scenes from the Bible. The panels are undergoing restoration work and the most iconic, the Adoration of the Mystic Lamb, has just been completed and is something not to miss. Elsewhere, stroll around the Graslei and Korenlei by the river
Lys, enjoy the gastronomic scene, and explore its historic Castle of the Counts. Stay Double rooms at the beautifully designed 1898 The Post cost from around £156 per night; zannierhotels. com/1898thepost
