Thank you for the music!

As Elton John’s Rocketman movie shows how music lifts us, readers share the songs that changed their lives.

Special songs take you back to a moment in time – whether it was the first dance at your wedding, a much-loved album from your teenage years or an unforgettable night out.

And for many of us, Elton John’s music triggers memories across the generations. His intensely personal performance of Candle in the Wind at the funeral of Princess Diana in 1997 crumbled the reserve of many a stiff upper lip. As he sang, “Goodbye England’s rose, may you ever grow in our hearts,” the nation allowed itself to weep, and the song became the biggest-selling single in UK history.

And his songs are about to reach a whole new audience with the rerelease of The Lion King in July, with classics such as Can you Feel the Love Tonight and Circle of Life.

Elton’s songs span a lifetime, but of course we all have our own special reasons for loving favourite music.

Here, readers share how their lives were influenced by Elton and other artists, back in the day…
