And for many of us, Elton John’s music triggers memories across the generations. His intensely personal performance of Candle in the Wind at the funeral of Princess Diana in 1997 crumbled the reserve of many a stiff upper lip. As he sang, “Goodbye England’s rose, may you ever grow in our hearts,” the nation allowed itself to weep, and the song became the biggest-selling single in UK history.
