MY SONG: LOVE ME TENDER ARTIST: ELVIS PRESLEY
My friend Jenny and I were nurses and in 1973 we were asked to work in Fort Worth, Texas. I was 27 at the time. Not long after we arrived Jenny started dating a police officer who worked as security for lots of high-profile people. He was so well connected that he got us tickets to see Elvis in concert at the Convention Center in Fort Worth – but it wasn’t until we got there that we realised we had front-row seats.
As we excitedly waved our banner saying “England loves you” he said to us that maybe he’d come and visit us one day. His charisma was amazing. He was known for throwing scarves into the audience and unbelievably Jenny caught one! Being a good friend, she cut it in half, so we had half each. Every time I hear Elvis sing, it reminds me of that wonderful evening.
I love How Great Thou Art, Suspicious Minds and Love Me Tender, which will always bring back wonderful memories of my years in America. Diana Woodcock, 72, East Sussex
