Do you need a supplement?
‘The processing of many foods now eaten in the UK eradicates many of the natural bacteria and yeasts,’ says Bio-Kult’s nutritional therapist Claire Barnes, who also advises that, unlike some other supplements, probiotics are safe to take long-term. David Wiener, nutrition specialist at fitness app Freeletics, agrees. ‘While you can get good bacteria through your diet, there is definite benefit to taking probiotic supplements in addition to eating these types of foods. And they work in a variety of ways, aiding digestion and supporting the immune system,’ he says. ‘Prebiotics can also be obtained through diet, but it’s increasingly evident that the modernday diet lacks fibre, and for that reason, supplementing with prebiotics could be a good idea. Studies show a benefit of taking prebiotics to enhance mineral absorption, reduce inflammation and help with energy levels.’ w&h
