YORKSHIRE SCULPTURE PARK, WEST YORKSHIRE
WHERE: West Bretton, near Wakefield WHY: Igniting imaginations, the natural beauty of this 500-acre park provides an incredible backdrop to the collection’s contemporary pieces. Once you’ve romped between those on your wish list, sizing up Damien Hirst’s Myth, Barbara Hepworth’s The Family of
Man and Ai Weiwei’s Circle of Animals / Zodiac Heads, get creative with finding a picnic spot among the park’s network of bridges and features, which include a Greek-style summer house, obelisk and shell grotto. No staid gallery environment is ever going to cut it again.
PERFECT PICNIC: Nibbles that you can graze on in between sculptures are the order of the day. Go for speciality bread, Shepherds Purse Yorkshire Blue cheese, Bracken Hill chutney and sliced Conference pears. Throw in a few bottles of York Brewery’s Minster ale and some Ampleforth Abbey cider, and you’ve sculpted a masterpiece of a picnic.
