CAMBER SANDS, EAST SUSSEX
Long grasses sway in the wind above the dunes at Camber Sands – according to a local legend, the dunes acquired their lush topping after a
Dutch ship that was carrying grass seeds to
South America sunk off the coast. It’s because of the dunes – the only ones in East Sussex – that Camber Sands has often played the role of the more exotic Sahara Desert in films and TV shows, although its greatest claim to fame was to star as a Normandy landing beach in The Monuments Men, under the feet of George Clooney, Bill Murray and Hugh Bonneville. The seven-mile beach is perfect for a day out with the children, but it is also great for grown-ups, too – the sunsets, in particular, are magnificent. Nearby, The Gallivant serves delicious food.
