SCARISTA BEACH, ISLE OF HARRIS

A slice of the Mediterranean hides in this remote corner of Scotland. Edged by machair-topped dunes, Scarista Beach is a three-mile sweep of golden sand stretching down to transparent waters. Hundreds of shells dot the shore, seals and jellyfish cavort in the sea and lapwings, terns and the occasional eagle fly above. From the beach, you can take in striking views of the Hills of Harris and the Isle of Taransay, where the BBC filmed Castaway. Should you feel peckish, the excellent restaurant at Scarista House is just across the road.
