BOTANY BAY, KENT
Tucked at the bottom of Botany Road, in Broadstairs, sits a beach of breathtaking beauty. Pristine white stacks tower over the sea and the golden sand, as if cloven from the white chalk cliffs by a giant’s hand. You can walk along the length of the beach towards Foreness Point, trying to spot the place where the 18th-century smuggler Joss Snelling climbed up the cliffs after an intense battle with a revenue patrol that had discovered his gang offloading goods on Botany Bay. All along the bay (and on the beaches alongside it) are small caves and tunnels where, according to local lore, the smugglers hid their contraband. >>
