By tackling small areas one by one, you’ll not only tidy where you live, but improve the way you live, too, says Anna-Lisa De’Ath

We often think of spring as the season for tidying up the house, but September is a great time for decluttering your home from top to bottom. The kids are back at school, the teens are away at uni and, after a busy summer at home with the family, it’s time to banish the clutter and make a fresh start.

If you’ve been working from home over the past few months, you may find you need to clear some space to make a more comfy home office area rather than trying to work in a messy makeshift space on the kitchen table.

Being surrounded by clutter and chaos can leave you feeling anxious and stressed and, although knowing where to start can be a little daunting, once you get going, you’ll feel like a weight has been lifted.

To stop yourself from feeling overwhelmed, tackle small areas one at a time, such as the linen cupboard or the pantry, rather than trying to blitz the whole house at once. Put on your favourite tunes, or an audio book, to help pass the time while you tackle each area and be ruthless with getting rid of damaged, unused or out-of-date items. Stock up on bin bags and make three piles as you begin sorting through your possessions – one to keep, one to ditch and one to take to the charity shop.

Decluttering and organising your home will make you feel so much better and help you think more clearly. Knowing exactly where everything is and being able to find something at the drop of a hat will make life so much easier as we head into autumn.
