Yoga teacher and Youtuber

Helen Faliveno (hmfyoga.com) shares how to get the most from your at-home yoga practice.

✢ Virtual benefits

‘Accessing online yoga classes allows you to schedule it to fit into your day,’ says Helen. ‘Going to a studio takes time, whereas yoga at home is convenient – you can even do it in your PJS! This makes committing to regular practise so much easier.’

✢ Pick your guru

‘Youtube is an amazing library for free yoga. You can find an instructor based on your personal preferences and level, whether that’s beginner or advanced,’ says Helen. ‘Look for someone who makes the instructions clear, so you don’t need to keep looking at the screen, and take the time to find a teacher whose voice and energy you enjoy.’

✢ A space to recharge

At home, all you need is a Wi-fi connection and room for a yoga mat. ‘I like to have plants around and a scented candle too,’ says Helen.

‘If you’re using a laptop to stream your yoga, shut down your email and all other tabs, so you’re not interrupted.’

✢ Listen to your body

‘Try to cherry-pick the style of yoga practice to see if it’s what you need that day,’ says Helen. However, she advises that when in the absence of a teacher, it’s important to pay attention to how you feel. ‘You are the expert on your body, so if something doesn’t feel right, adapt the pose and don’t push into pain.’
