‘My girls reminded me of my childhood cricket days’

‘It is so much fun that no one really minds who wins or loses’

I loved playing cricket at primary school, running around with my friends in the fresh air. There wasn’t too much pressure and it always seemed like far more fun than other sports we did. But when I went to secondary school, it was the boys who got to carry on with cricket, while the girls played netball and hockey, neither of which I particularly liked.

After I left school and met my husband Jim at university, I remained active, going to the gym and swimming, but I didn’t get back into cricket until my own two girls, Zoe, now 12, and Erin, 11, discovered it.

Watching them bat and field brought back fond memories of how much I’d enjoyed it in my youth. So when their club announced it was starting a team for parents, I decided to join – and I love it. Yes, we play to a far lower standard than the children on the pitch next to us, but it is so much fun that no one really minds who wins or loses.

I run my own business, which can get quite stressful, so concentrating on something completely different on a Friday night is the perfect start to the weekend. Everyone is really friendly and we often stay at the club for dinner or a drink afterwards.

It’s lovely to have something else in common with the girls – and to show them that it’s important to have a healthy lifestyle in adulthood too. But it’s also good to have something for me. My days at school are far behind me, but my days of returning to school sports are just beginning.
