MAJESTIC WATERS

-

Lake Garda is the perfect place to relax and take in the

wonderful scenery, from the surrounding mountains

to its sparkling shores

Spectacular is too small a word to do justice to the vast expanse of glittering water, which is sparkling silver and brimming with water sports enthusiasts. The lake and its shoreline are divided between the provinces of Verona in the south east, Brescia in the south west and Trento in the north. The name ‘Garda’ literally means ‘place of safety’, and it most certainly feels as though its shores are giving you a giant hug.

My day began with a magical sunrise swim at the comfortable Hotel Kristal Palace. The rooms here are bijou, but the jewel in the crown is the rooftop pool, set in the freshest air with the most spectacular, majestic views of the surrounding lake and mountains.

The town of Garda is a harbourside treat, where the locals often sit with a glass of Aperol spritz at 10.30am! Full of cafes and charming shops selling leather shoes, belts and bags, all at great prices, it’s a lovely way to spend a morning.

The local village of Sirmione is famous for its 13th-century fairy-tale castle

– an idyllic spot to enjoy the views while devouring local pizza and the best gelato you could ever taste. Ice cream shops are sprinkled round the bay like confetti. I can highly recommend the ginger, honey and cinnamon – simply sublime. After a late lunch, board the ferry to Salò and sit on the deck taking in the air and beautiful vistas. I felt entirely ready for a celebratory cocktail when we arrived at our destination, and the northern Italians do not disappoint. The local aperitif is one part gin, one part vermouth rosso and one part Campari, stirred not shaken. Talking of which,

the opening sequence of Quantum of Solace is legendary in these parts. >>
