Stand-out moments
Be warned – the soft, ivory sands of Tobago’s endless beaches are seriously seductive. It’s bliss to relax in the shade of palm fronds, take lazy dips in the ginclear water, or ‘lime’ (hang out) at a beach bar with the friendly locals. The beach is also the place for activities, like bareback horse-riding at Buccoo Beach, or seeing endangered leatherback turtles lay their eggs under a starlit sky at Courland Bay.
Underwater riches
Clear waters and teeming sea life makes Tobago one of the world’s top dive destinations. You can also see this incredible ecosystem via an eco-friendly glass-bottomed boat at Buccoo Reef Marine Park. Plus, a catamaran cruise can whisk you to secluded coves, passing pods of dolphins and flying fish. Spend a dreamy few hours swimming and snorkelling (look out for rays, turtles and angelfish), or swaying in deck hammocks, refuelling with an on-board barbecue.
Natural highs
Away from the coast, the forest-clad interior is home to tiny, jewel-bright hummingbirds and cute creatures like the agouti – similar to a large guinea pig. Take an easy hike to the island’s highest cascade, Argyle Falls, which boast three natural pools. Enjoy an exhilarating allover massage from the rushing waters, then dive into the refreshing top pool.
Romantic sunsets
The magic keeps on going as the sun dips to the horizon. Take a seat at a beachside restaurant to watch a glorious sunset, accompanied by rum punch, barbecued ribs or fish, or local favourites, such as the catch of the day, fried plantain, or crab and dumplings. Or kayak under the stars in the calm waters of Bon Accord Lagoon and discover a shimmering seascape of glowing plankton. Whatever you choose, you’re sure to bring home some truly amazing memories.
