How to get a… MODERN UPDO

-

“Coloured hair makes it easier to do a cool updo,” says Kiki. “Both the texture and the multiple shades stop it looking blocky. You don’t want it to look too bridal, nor too smooth or glossy,” he continues. “And certainly no crunchy, tightly tonged curls. It needs to be touchable.” Any more advice? “If day to day you wear your hair flatter to your head, then make your updo tight; if you generally have more volume, then that’s the way to go. Follow your instinct for what is most flattering on you.”

1 Start by brushing damp hair through with a Tangle Teezer and then blow-dry upsidedown to create as much natural volume as possible. Remember, a modern do is gutsy but you don’t want to resort to overloading your hair with products.

2 It’s flattering to get some subtle height at the crown as it draws the eye upwards and “lifts” features. Use a tail comb to gently tease the hair at the roots and underneath, to create a “step” for the top of the hair to sit on, creating more height.

3 Gather your hair at the nape of the neck and pin it in place. Twist the hair round as many times as it will reach, keeping the bun as small as possible. By doing this, and keeping it a little messy, the finished look will be more current.

4 Fringes can be very flattering, especially in updos. If you don’t have one, you can create one by doing a low side parting. Finish the look with a few light spritzes of Time Bomb Hair Spray. “It’s a great product for keeping it all in place,” says Kiki.
