Looking for a New Year treat? Period drama Darkest Hour won’t disappoint. A thrilling account of the tumultuous early weeks of WW11, we see a nation and a man in turmoil.

Starring Bafta-winner Gary Oldman as Churchill and Kristen Scott Thomas as his brilliant wife Clementine, it gives us a revealing and touching insight into the man behind the icon.

It’s May 10, 1940, Winston Churchill has just been appointed Prime Minister and a Nazi invasion is imminent. With Europe falling, the Nazi forces advancing and the British Army stranded on the beaches of Dunkirk, the fate of Western Europe hangs on his leadership. Churchill must make an unenviable decision: negotiate a peace treaty with Hitler or battle on against incredible odds.

Despite Churchill’s intellect and wit, King George VI doubts his ability and his own party is plotting against him. In the midst of these crises at home and abroad, two indomitable women bolster his spirit – Clemmie and his tireless secretary Elizabeth Layton (Lily James).

With their support, Churchill looks to the British people to inspire him to fight for his nation’s ideals, liberty, and freedom. Rising above the political chicanery, he delivers the now-famous speech that rallies the country behind him and changes the course of world history.

Written by Academy Award nominee Anthony Mccarten and directed by BAFTA winner Joe Wright (Atonement), this lavish production boasts a stellar cast, stunning period detail and pulls no punches in delivering high-octane drama and emotion . Round up family and friends – it’s a great way to kick off the New Year!
