She had A one-night stand

-

QI found a younger colleague crying in the toilets. we only spoke briefly, but she said she’d had a one-night stand the night before. I want to help, but I honestly don’t know what to say to her.

Susan says:

AWhat you say to your colleague isn’t nearly as important as how you listen to her. Because what she probably needs is to explore why she feels so bad. Does she feel ashamed? Does she feel embarrassed? Perhaps she’s scared she’s caught an infection or got pregnant. Or perhaps she’s recently slept with someone inappropriate, like her boss? If so, is the problem that she’s in a relationship, worried about her partner finding out? Suggest a coffee, let her talk it through. Caring attention is always the best form of support.
