aIt could have been gout – a kind of inflammatory arthritis caused by uric acid crystals building up in the joint. It often affects the big toe and causes pain, swelling, heat and redness. An attack is more likely if you have lots of alcohol, sugary drinks, red meat, liver or shellfish, so Christmas won’t have helped! Losing weight and staying off said foods may help. If it recurs, use painkillers and see your GP.
