Medication Madness – HELP!

-

QI am utterly confused. My thyroid is overactive, but I am also on thyroid replacement medicine – it doesn’t make sense!

Philippa says

aDoctors treat an overactive thyroid (hyperthyroidism) in a variety of ways, including medication or radioactive iodine. It can be tricky to get the exact dosage correct to ensure enough thyroxine is being produced. Low levels of the hormone also cause problems. It is often easier to use treatments to stop the thyroid gland producing any at all, and then replacing with oral thyroxine to achieve the correct levels and control the symptoms.
