overweight rat – What should i do?

-

This is very common but it can lead to health problems down the line and is easily avoided. Some rats control their weight well, others will over-eat out of boredom, greed, or just because the food is there.

Remember that rats are small and do not need large amounts of food. Weigh their rat pellets using kitchen scales. One level tablespoon of fruit (such as bananas or strawberries) or veg (peas and carrots) can also be given daily. Treats can be hidden around the cage; a fun game that burns calories.

Increase their activity by providing large cages with plenty of levels and options to climb. Tunnels, wheels and ropes are great additions. Bring your rat out for play time and offer at least one hour of daily supervised play.
