Josh’s first TV appearance was in an episode of ITV’S Lewis, and he’s since starred in Doctor Who, Ripper Street and Peaky Blinders. But it’s his role as Larry in The Durrells that propelled him to fame. Soon to appear as Prince Charles in The Crown, Josh is currently starring as marius in BBC1’S nonmusical version of Les Misérables
were you a fan of the musical before taking this role? Yeah. my first ever audition after drama school was to play marius in the film. Didn’t get it. hopefully i won’t be compared to eddie Redmayne!
How would you describe marius? marius is a young, upper class french chap. he has this ongoing battle about where he lies politically and as that’s going on, he meets cosette, who he discovers is the love of his life. he has to choose between love and his political and social conscience.
Tell us about filming some of the drama’s emotional scenes… it’s so sad. there has been a hell of a lot of crying. i couldn’t wait to get back to corfu to film The Durrells.
Does it help it was mostly filmed on location? Yes, i think it does. the most helpful it’s been so far is the barricade stuff where we built an actual barricade in an actual street. You climbed over it with machine guns and it was pretty exciting.
