CAN’T STOP SNACKING?

-

Eating well is about more than willpower alone. Here are some tricks to keep the snacking urge at bay.

EAT MORE PROTEIN

Most cravings are a result of falling blood sugar levels – and if you eat sugary foods, your blood sugar levels will be all over the place. Protein, on the other hand, keeps those levels stable, and helps you feel fuller for longer. SHOP WELL

It sounds simple, but if you don’t have it, you can’t eat it. Instead, keep snacks such as nuts, fruit and veg to hand for when you feel peckish.

GET ENOUGH SLEEP

Research has shown that not getting enough sleep means we eat up to 300 calories more the next day, which is not ideal if you’re trying to lose weight. Being overtired makes us reach for carb-rich foods to replace the lost energy.

HUNGRY OR THIRSTY?

Are you really hungry, or are you just thirsty? Before you reach for a snack, drink a large glass of water and wait 10 minutes to see if your hunger subsides.

EAT MINDFULLY

Don’t mindlessly shovel food into your mouth while at your laptop or while watching TV. Take notice of what you’re eating so you feel more satisfied.

BUY SMALL PORTIONS

If you know you’re a grazer, buy your favourite snacks in small portions – it’s much easier than kidding yourself you’ll only eat a small amount of a larger portion!
