HAS TRAVELLING WITH MY PUP CHANGED POST BREXIT?
Now that Brexit has come into force, there are new rules for travelling internationally with our pets. As before, the country you are travelling to will have its own unique regulations, so it is important to check the government website to determine what exactly is needed. Always take a look at gov.uk/taking-your-petabroad when planning a trip.
Just like in 2020, there are a set number of things that need to be done to travel within the EU, like having your pet microchipped, having a valid Rabies vaccination and having an ‘Animal Health Certificate’. Some countries will also require your dog has been treated for tapeworm.
A new Animal Health Certificate is needed for each trip and is required for travel from Great Britain to Northern Ireland. If your pet’s passport was issued in the EU, they do not need these certificates. An official vet will have to issue it. Once issued, you must leave Great Britain within 10 days. It is valid for return purposes for up to four months.
For the Rabies vaccine, remember your pet must be over 12 weeks of age before they can be vaccinated. Once they have had their jab, they must then wait an additional 21 days before they can leave Great Britain. How often this vaccine requires a booster depends on the brand, but this information will be recorded in the Animal Health Certificate.
