It’s a multimilli­on-pound industry, but can a short-term cleanse really be good for your health?

January is – thankfully – well behind us, with millions of us having tried, and perhaps failed, a new year ‘cleanse’. The trend has exploded in recent years, with the detox-product market worth more than £30m – set to rise to £40m in the next five years.

Juicing, teas and cutting out food groups are popular. They promise anything from a flatter tum and clearer skin to shiny hair and more energy. Many Hollywood stars are big fans of a pre-award ceremony cleanse to beat the bloat and get in that showstoppi­ng dress.

But some nutritioni­sts warn ‘quick fixes’ can be dangerous or cause weight gain in the long term. So, is there a healthy way to detox? Woman investigat­es.
