DOS & DON’TS
Dr Laura Wynes (laurawyness.com), registered nutritionist with the Association for Nutrition, says: Your lungs, kidney, liver and other organs work 24/7 to ‘detoxify’ you. If you want your organs to work efficiently, then you shouldn’t deprive them of nutrients. Rather than a short cleanse or detox, a healthier approach would be a nutrient-rich daily diet.
✱ Avoid any diet that sounds extreme. The body works better in balance.
✱ Focus on one or two small positive changes a few weeks at a time. For example, cut out caffeinated drinks or alcohol for a month, or drink a litre of water by lunchtime. You’re more likely to maintain positive changes.
✱ Seek advice from a nutritionist to ensure your diet has essential nutrients.
✱ Be wary of extreme claims, such as ‘rapid weight loss’ or ‘getting rid of cellulite’. Any rapid weight loss is likely to be from water, glycogen and muscle rather than fat. So, when you finish, you’ll likely regain the weight.
✱ Increase fibre intake – fewer than one in 10 adults achieve the 30g a day fibre recommendation.
