Why won’t he support me?

QAfter a recent promotion, my boss offered to send me for further training so I can climb even higher. My first husband, who died 10 years ago, often told me I should be more ambitious and encouraged me. When I told the man I’m with now, he laughed at me. He told me I don’t have the skills I’d need and, since I hate confrontation, I couldn’t be a good leader. I tried to say that was why I needed the training, but it just ended in an argument. I’ve tried to bring it up since but he just gets angry. Am I being silly to feel so crushed?
