MY ELDERLY LABRADOR HAS STARTED GROWLING AND SNAPPING WHEN WE GO NEAR HIS TOYS AND FOODS. WHAT’S GOING ON?

-

I’m sorry to hear this, and understand it must be very upsetting when this kind of behaviour starts in an older dog. The way you describe him, it sounds as though he has developed ‘resource guarding’, a type of behaviour that dogs display when anxious that we may take their things or when feeling vulnerable in general.

We need to ask why this has suddenly started. Consider whether anything has changed; for example, an altered routine or a new pet in the home. Perhaps you are giving different treats or chews or haven’t been able to go on as many walks recently?

Another thing that must be considered in an older dog is an underlying medical condition. Any source of chronic pain such as dental disease, joint disease or an ear infection can cause a dog to feel ‘exposed’ and to suddenly become wary of us if they feel we are too near.

For some, the change in behaviour may be down to canine dementia. As well as becoming grumpy and snappy, other signs can include vacant staring, difficulty sleeping, repetitive behaviours and frequent barking. Ideally, we will get to the bottom of what is going on and address the root cause. For example, if we find that he has hip dysplasia and arthritis, he may well become a different dog once on the correct medication and treatment plan.

Be sure not to punish any growling or hiding away, as this can make the behaviour worse. Instead, try to manage his things and the environment to avoid the guarding behaviour. Offer a safe space and comfortable bed where he knows he will be left alone with his items. If he cannot be trusted to give up high-value treats such as chews, you should stop giving them for now.
