What to watch On the cover

After being cancelled last year, Eurovision is back! This week, Rylan joins Radio 1 DJ Scott Mills and singersongwriter Chelcee Grimes in Rotterdam to present coverage of the semi-finals which will decide the countries who will be joining France, Germany, Spain, Italy, the UK and the Netherlands in the big final on Saturday, 22 May.

After missing out on Eurovision last year, how does it feel to be back?

It feels great. We were gutted last year when the contest had to be cancelled but safety is paramount. This year we need double the fun! It’s the perfect excuse to escape how we’re living at the moment and you can really lose yourself for a few hours.

Do you have any advice for Chelcee, who is joining you and Scott this year? I’m so excited! I’ve had the pleasure of meeting her before and she’s lovely. She’s going to have the time of her life!

James Newman will represent the UK with his song Embers. What do you think about it?

He’s so talented and he’s got a great personality – I hope that shines through.

He’s a great bloke and I can’t wait to be cheering him on!

What’s your favourite style of song? I love the big, euphoric, upbeat numbers. When someone comes on and belts out a banger, it really feels like we’re all part of the same thing. Coverage of the Eurovision Song Contest semi-finals is on BBC4
