Diagnosis and treatment
Your doctor may use a calculation tool (such as FRAX) to work out your risk of a fracture in the next decade, as well as using a bone density scan (DEXA scan). If you are diagnosed with osteoporosis you are likely to be offered medication, such as bisphosphonates, which are generally taken once per week for a period of five years before the DEXA scan is repeated. You may also be advised about calcium and all-yearround vitamin D supplements.
