We’re friends – but does he want benefits?

-

QMy ex and I broke up last summer. It was all very mutual, we’ve stayed good friends and have regularly gone to watch films and out for meals, although I wouldn’t want us to get back together. Problem is, he’s just messaged inviting me for supper. He’s suggested a Monday, and when I checked the date, I realised it’s Valentine’s Day. Now I’m worried. Should I be reading something into this – and, if so, how should I respond?

ASUSAN SAYS Whether or not your ex has an agenda by inviting you round on Valentine’s Day, it isn’t wise to accept the invitation when you don’t want to reunite. But it would be wise to tactfully check out whether he’s wanting to get back together. If he isn’t, no problem. If he is, make it clear that’s not possible. In either case, though, I’d see each other slightly less so you both start to move on.
