Do dogs really need coats?

-

QWe have just got a crossbreed rescue dog. I see other dogs wearing coats at this time of year, and wondered if he needs one?

ALINDA SAYS This depends on the breed and age of your dog, as well as the weather. As a general rule, a fit, healthy dog with a normal coat of fur will be fine on a short walk so long as they are running around. Dogs like whippets and greyhounds with a thin layer of fur will feel the cold, however, just as you would. Something like a husky is bred for cold conditions and has a thick coat that keeps them warm naturally. Of course no dog should be left out in the cold. They should always have available shelter where they can keep warm and dry. If your dog has a thin coat, or you’ll be walking him in all weathers, then a coat is a good idea. There are plenty to choose from. Look for features like water-resistance, fleece or quilting for warmth and reflective strips for safety. When ordering, measure your dog and check the size, so it will be snug, but not too tight. From personal experience I can recommend the Joules dog coats.
