Phytoestrogens

-

These oestrogen-like compounds are found in plants, and may mimic oestrogen in the body. Rich sources are soy beans and their products, like tempeh, as well as some seeds and legumes, fruit and vegetables, such as yams and tomatoes.

In countries where the diet is rich in phytoestrogens, such as Japan, women report fewer symptoms of menopause. But there may be factors aside from diet involved. The jury’s still out on phytoestrogen-rich food and its benefits. Some ideas support its efficacy, while other studies show it has little effect.

It’s not known how much you need to eat or whether you need to have eaten it your whole life for it to have a positive impact. However, eating a diet that’s rich in soy beans, legumes and fruit and veg is unlikely to cause any harm, as these are all nutrient-rich options.
