How can I help the environment?
QI’ve seen publicity saying it’s Fairtrade Fortnight. It’s great that this helps farmers, but is there anything similar to help the environment?
ARAE SAYS I’ve got good news: Fairtrade does both. When you buy an item featuring the familiar Fairtrade logo, which looks a bit like the yin and yang symbol, the profits go towards better wages and working conditions for the farmers, growers and their communities. What’s less well known, however, is that the scheme also encourages farmers to protect the environment, for example by conserving water, and offers training in new agricultural methods that will help them to adapt to the changing climate. In fact, the theme of this year’s Fairtrade Fortnight, running until 6 March, is climate justice. You can support people and planet by purchasing any of the many thousand Fairtrade certified products, from tea, coffee and sugar to wine, roses and gold – and check out the Choose the World You Want Festival that’s happening online during Fairtrade Fortnight too (fairtrade. org.uk/choose-the-world-you-want).
