REVERSE TYPE 2 DIABETES WITH AN NHS DIET
Thanks to a strict weight-loss programme, the NHS has helped more than 2,000 people with type 2 diabetes to overhaul their lifestyle, lose weight and improve their health.
During the trial, those who stuck to the three-month-long regime of ‘total diet replacement products’ such as shakes and soups – of which nine in 10 did – lost an average of 13kg (over 2st). After this, a carefully managed plan to reintroduce healthy, nutritious food kicks in, with support provided by coaches and clinicians. A previous NHS trial showed that half of those with similar weight loss achieved remission of their type 2 diabetes after a year. Off the back of this, the NHS Low Calorie Diet programme will be rolled out in 11 more regions and may be suitable for 18-65-year-olds, who’ve been diagnosed with type 2 diabetes in the past six years and are also overweight.
