I feel bad about getting more inheritance

-

Q

I am the eldest of five and our mother has always delighted in causing rows between us. She’d play favourites and while it was confusing for the others as she chopped and changed, with me it was clear – I was always the outsider. My gran and I got on so I started spending time with her, which

the rest of the family did not. Now she probably doesn’t have much longer to go, and I’ve found out she’s leaving money to all of us, but far more to me as well as belongings. Is she showing favouritism like my mum? I don’t want to benefit from unfairness but would this be ungrateful?

SUZIE SAYS

A

Your mum showed favouritism for her own ends. Your gran wants to thank you for your kindness. If your siblings had shown support to you, you’d have the option of sharing some money but if they, in effect, colluded with your mum by fighting for their place and letting everyone else – you and your gran – fend for themselves, then simply accept the gift with good memories and gratitude.
