I really want to lose weight – how can I get fit without spending a fortune at a gym?

Thankfully, one of the best ways to get fitter is a brisk walk, which may feel more appealing as the weather improves. If you need motivation, download a pedometer app on your phone or search online for a second-hand fitness tracker, and aim for 10,000 steps a day. For company, arrange walks with a friend or consider joining a local walking group. If you want to start running, I really recommend the free NHS Couch to 5K podcasts and app, before taking part in free Parkruns (parkrun.org.uk) on Saturday mornings. For a lower-impact alternativ­e, swimming is great, especially if you have a not-for-profit leisure centre nearby with lower prices and senior discounts. Otherwise, check out Youtube options such as Yoga With Adriene for exercise in the comfort of your own home.
