Could I be at risk from my partner’s sexual past?

-

Q

I’ve fallen for a wonderful man, but he’s bisexual and his previous partner was male. I really love him, but I keep on panicking about whether he’s got a sexual infection, even though he says he’s always had protected sex. I can’t get it out of my mind that he could have AIDS, but not have any symptoms. Should I ask him to get tested for HIV before we even start to think about making love?

A

SUSAN SAYS Testing for sexual infections before intimacy with someone new is essential. So, actually, you and your new man should both get checked out. But I also wonder if you’re concerned not just about his sexual history, but his emotional history. So is he more attracted to men than women? Is he soon going to lose interest in you? I’d settle your emotional panics – as well as your health ones – before you seriously commit.
