My bills are unaffordable – please help
Q I’m struggling to afford my gas and electricity bills. Is there any help available to me?
FAITH A SAYS
Typical energy bills rose by 12% last October and will rise another 54% from April, if you’re not on a fixed rate. Government promises of £150 Council Tax rebates in April for bands A to D, and £200 off electricity bills in October, may be too little, too late. People on Pension Credit should automatically get the Warm Homes Discount of £140 a year off their electricity bill (apply-for-pension-credit.service.gov.uk or call 0800 99 1234). Others, such as those on Universal Credit, need to apply to their energy company. If temperatures really drop, many people who are on benefits qualify for Cold Weather Payments. Born before 26 September 1955? Claim Winter Fuel Payment. Ask your supplier for help, such as affordable repayment plans and fuel grants. Then check if your council offers help via a household support fund or welfare assistance scheme.
