Which hot cross buns topped the leader board?
Traditional
Jacksons Tea-infused Hot Cross Buns, 4-pack, £1.60, Ocado Judges enjoyed the texture of the light dough. Silvana Franco, acting food director, loved the ‘delicious spicy aroma and plump juicy fruits’.
Own-brand
Irresistible Richly Fruited Hot Cross Buns, 4-pack, £1.50, Co-op
Glossy with an even cross, these buns were plump and well risen. Senior food writer Jessica Ransom says, ‘I enjoyed the plump and juicy fruit. It would make it a lovely choice for an Easter bread and butter pudding.’

Free From Hot Cross Buns, 4-pack, £2, Morrisons
Judges were impressed with the texture of these traditional buns. They had a satisfying bite compared to others in the free-from category. The judges felt they were in need of a little salt but serving with a quality salty butter would easily solve this.
Alternative
Irresistible Masala & Chilli Hot Cross Buns, 4-pack, £1.50, Co-op Admittedly, this flavour isn’t very traditional but it’s a nice savoury alternative and would be delicious toasted and served with wilted spinach and a fried egg.
White Chocolate and Lemon
Hot Cross Buns, 4-pack, £1.65, Waitrose & Partners
As soon as you open the packet, the lemon zest hits you. The dough is rich and brioche-like with a good scattering of white chocolate chunks. For added indulgence, deputy food editor Rose Fooks suggests serving with lashings of lemon curd.
Extra Special Belgian Chocolate and Sourdough Hot Cross Buns, 4-pack, £1.50, Asda
Plump with a hand-finished appearance, these buns were a little uneven in shape but had a good distribution of chocolate. Also look out for the Belgian Blonde chocolate buns, which are unapologetically sweet but sure to be a hit with kids.
