Step it down
The 10,000 step goal was originally a marketing ploy rather than medical advice, so how many should we be doing? People over the age of 60 need only aim to take 6,000 to 8,000 steps, which could reduce the risk of an early death by up to 54%, according to American researchers*. Meanwhile, under 60s should do between 8,000 and 10,000 steps. There were no further benefits to walking further – and speed made no difference either.
