What’s the big deal with grass seed?

-

QI’ve heard that dogs can have problems with grass seeds in summer. Why is this?

AMany wild grasses produce seeds that are hard and sharp, and these can sometimes get embedded in your dog’s skin. In some cases these can work their way in deep or move around within your pet’s body, causing a painful infection. To keep problems to a minimum, make sure your dog’s hair is trimmed short in summer, and avoid areas with long grass. Check your pet over for grass seeds after a walk, being especially thorough with breeds that have hairy, feathery toes, like spaniels. Look out for any unusual pet behaviour, too. Head shaking, sneezing, chewing feet, scratching an ear or rubbing eyes could all be signs that a seed is embedded.
