✱ Robert Murat was the first ‘arguido’ named in the case, on 14 May 2007. Then 34, the British-born property consultant was living 150 yards from the Mccanns’ apartment on the night Madeleine went missing. He denied any involvemen­t, and after searching his home and devices, he was officially cleared of suspicion on 21 July 2008.

✱ In January 2009, dying convicted paedophile Raymond Hewlett admitted to being in the area at the time Madeleine went missing, but claimed to have an alibi. He died in 2010, aged 64, but in a letter from his deathbed to his son, he claimed Madeleine had been ‘stolen to order’ by a Belgium-based gang.
