As Midsomer Murders celebrates its 25th anniversary, the crime drama returns with a new mystery involving some grisly deaths at the annual Midsomer Scarecrow Festival. Among the guest stars in this episode is Jessica Ellerby, the real-life wife of Nick Hendrix – Nick plays DS Jamie Winter alongside Neil Dudgeon as DCI John Barnaby. Here, she tells us more…

Have you worked with Nick before?

It was our first time and it was a really nice, enjoyable experience. It was in the middle of lockdown so I felt two weeks was the max we could have done – we literally weren’t seeing anybody else. Work was the only time we left the house, and it was with each other!

Tell us about your character, journalist Caitlin Dawson… She’s very straightforward, headstrong, no-nonsense and doesn’t suffer fools gladly. It’s nice to play someone who isn’t wishy-washy or weak in any way. I think it’s fair to say she goes above and beyond for her job. She’s climbing the ranks and keen to make her mark.

Have Caitlin and

Jamie met before?

They went out with each other when they were at university.

It was a long time ago, but it’s definitely left its mark on them both. There’s a question mark about whether they’re over one another, and also a question mark around how it ended. Did she cheat on him or was it already over? They clash at times, but there’s definitely still some chemistry between them.

Did you enjoy filming on location?

Yes. We had the beautiful, picturesque English countryside, but we didn’t quite get the glorious English summer days. There was a lot of rain and we had a big storm with 50mph wind for two days while I was filming. There was a lot of hair flying about!
