Would you approve of your daughter BARING ALL ON TV?

With reality shows like Love Island luring impressionable young women, how do mums feel about seeing their daughters on screen?

-

As Love Island draws to a close, millions have spent the summer glued to the unfolding romances. Love it or hate it, the series hasn’t been without controversy. From the age-gap relationship of 19-year-old Gemma Owen and Davide, 27 (below), to the return of Adam Collard, four years after he was accused of emotional manipulation in the villa, the show has caused a storm.

Concerns have been highlighted by such charities as Women’s Aid, who warned of the impact of showing unhealthy relationships on our screens. But while many of us are happy to watch the chaos unfold on TV, what if it was closer to home? Gemma’s dad, Michael, for one, admitted he’d been wary about his daughter signing up to the show.

Here, Woman speaks to two mums to find out how they’d feel about their daughters baring all on reality TV…

The daily jobs of this year’s

contestants have included a nanny, a fishmonger and a paramedic, but where do they end up after leaving the villa?

CHRIS HUGHES AND KEM CETINAY After the 2017 series ended, the BFFS embarked on a TV and

(brief) musical career together. Chris dated Jesy Nelson from Little Mix, while Kem appeared on Dancing On Ice and even had his own Primark clothing range.

GEORGIA TOWNEND Georgia, a contestant in 2021, swiftly returned to her old job after the show. Working as a marketing executive at Lidl, she joked on Instagram: ‘It’s been instilled into me my entire career that checkouts should be as speedy as possible.’

ALEX GEORGE

The islander perhaps most well known for returning to his old job reprised his role as an A&E doctor after his 2018 stint in the villa. He was also appointed a youth mental health ambassador last year.

AMBER GILL

Amber (below), who took part in 2019, went into the villa as a beauty therapist, but life has changed dramatically since her win. The star now makes regular appearances on daytime TV including Loose Women and This Morning, and has launched her own clothing collection with

online brand Misspap.

A SPOKESPERSON FROM ITV SAID: ‘We’re not saying the whole world looks like (Love Island).

It is an aspirational show. Normal life doesn’t always look like this, nor should it. But what is refreshing, and engaging, is that these sorts of people share all the same insecurities and issues as we do.’
