UK’S favour, Turkey is a savvy destination – even if you book a top-notch all-inclusive. Marmaris, near Dalaman Airport, is hugely popular with tourists. But head a bit further to the Bozburun Peninsula and the atmosphere calms. Roads climb up into pine woods, lending glimpses of the beautiful Aegean sea. The only place of any size here is beachy Turunç – a great base for your budget break.

The main draw here is the landscape: deep, clear, swimmable coves and bays you can visit on boat tours (often with food and wine included). The gulet, a Turkish yacht, is the day-trip vessel of choice. All around you as you cruise, you’ll spot gigantic sun-baked headlands and gnarly old olive trees.

The other draw is the fish restaurants, which seem to be at every turn on this coast. Each one will welcome you with just-caught red mullet and turbot. You’ll spend lazy afternoons and evenings nibbling on a feast overlooking the water and sipping local fire-water raki. Don’t miss the tavern at little Amos beach, for refreshing Efes beers, or boutiquey Dionysos. Besides the views, you’re here for meze (local tapas) and glasses of refreshing Turkish rosé.
