Blue Anchor, Somerset
Most people don’t think of Somerset as coastal – which makes it something of a secret for a summer break. The county’s northern border is the breezy blue Bristol Channel, overlooking Wales. Between Watchet and Porlock is a string of lost-in-time spots, where old pubs do fish and chips (try the Smugglers Inn in Blue Anchor) and the walks are wild and brambly. Porlock Weir to Lynton has breathtaking views of the coast over Exmoor Park.
