Make savings with Kalpana’s top tips…

THRIFTY TRAIN TRIPS

With all the chaos at the airports, you may be thinking of staying put in the UK this summer. If you do, here’s how to save on your staycation train fares…

✱ Buy in advance. According to Trainline (thetrainline.com), tickets can be 61% cheaper if you buy them eight to 12 weeks ahead of your journey. But check the terms and conditions, in case your plans change.

✱ Save with a Railcard. Depending on your circumstances, you could save with a Railcard. For example, 26- to 30-year-olds get one-third off rail fares. A Family & Friends Railcard also gives a third off fares for adults, and 60% off for children. Cards cost £30 a year. See more at railcard.co.uk

✱ Split tickets. Instead of buying one ticket for your journey, you could save up to 90% on your fare by buying multiple tickets for different parts of the journey. Take a look at Split My Fare (splitmyfare.co.uk).
