‘No one should have to give up their pet’
Catherine Marsden is a trustee at Doodle Rescue.
A huge rise in people giving up their pets post-lockdown, coupled with the cost-of-living crisis means many rescue centres are overflowing and being forced to close their doors. At Doodle, we are receiving requests to rehome poodle-cross dogs every single day. One lady came to us in desperation when her dog had puppies – the dog had been so malnourished, the owner hadn’t realised she was expecting.
Giving up a pet should be a last resort. We urge anyone who is struggling financially to ask for help: Look for a pet food bank in your area. Contact charities for food vouchers. Ask vets for a payment plan. Search Facebook groups for support with walks and grooming. Speak to friends and family.
