How do you wear out a kitten?

-

Q We have decided to get a kitten. Can you give any advice on how to play with it?

EMMA SAYS

A Play is important for helping your kitten to develop normal cat behaviours, such as stalking and pouncing. It is great for bonding and socialisation too, making for a happier, healthier adult pet. Keep play sessions short, and fit in several a day. It helps to have a variety of toys that you can rotate to keep the cat interested. Avoid things like ribbon and string, which could cause a blockage if swallowed.

You want to avoid fingers and toes becoming toys, of course! Choose toys you can dangle, and keep fingers out of the way. Cats are naturally drawn to movement, so if it does go for your fingers, keep them still and use a new toy for distraction. Give the cat plenty of praise when they get things right. You might want to invite a friend or family member round to help begin the socialisation. Make sure that the experience is calm, and do not force it if the cat appears to be anxious.
